Amazon India enters at-home diagnostics space, expands healthcare vertical

-

Amazon India is expanding its healthcare ambitions by entering the at-home diagnostics market, as it looks to position itself as a comprehensive medical services platform beyond online pharmacy and teleconsultation.

The ecommerce major has partnered with Orange Health Labs to launch its diagnostics offering, enabling home sample collection within 60 minutes and test results in under six hours for routine tests. The service currently operates across six cities Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai and Hyderabad covering over 450 pin codes.

This launch comes months after Amazon Smbhav Venture Fund led a $12 million funding round in Orange Health Labs in December 2024. The Bengaluru-based startup, founded in 2020, is backed by Accel, General Catalyst, Bertelsmann India, and Y Combinator, and has raised over $50 million to date.

“Amazon Medical has Pharmacy and Clinic. But many doctor consultations eventually require lab tests — we saw a gap there. Diagnostics completes that loop,” said Jayaramakrishnan Balasubramanian, category leader, Amazon Medical.

Amazon Medical includes medicine delivery via third-party seller partners and online doctor consultations. The pharmacy arm, launched two years ago, is among the fastest-growing businesses for Amazon India, Balasubramanian added. Same-day medicine delivery is currently available across 23 cities.

With this move, Amazon steps into a diagnostics market estimated to be worth $15 billion in 2024, competing with players like PharmEasy-owned Thyrocare, Tata 1mg, Dr Lal Path Labs, Apollo Diagnostics, Redcliffe Labs, and numerous regional providers. “Fast and reliable at-home diagnostics are still inaccessible for many, even in urban areas,” said Dhruv Gupta, cofounder of Orange Health Labs. “When you’re unwell, convenience isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. Yet the current experience isn’t seamless. That’s the opportunity we’re solving.”

The diagnostics sector is growing at 15% annually, driven by consumer demand for convenience, faster results, and post-pandemic digitisation of health services. The expansion marks Amazon’s deeper play in the digital health ecosystem, as rivals double down on ultra-fast medicine delivery, doctor consultation networks, and integrated diagnostics.
