The Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) Mumbai Film Festival has announced the second edition of its “MAMI Select – Filmed on iPhone” initiative, in its support for emerging filmmakers across India. With a focus on elevating fresh voices and expanding the possibilities of filmmaking, the initiative will provide four selected filmmakers with an iPhone 16 Pro Max to shoot their films, a MacBook Pro for editing, and a grant to fund their projects. This year, the program takes a significant step toward inclusivity by opening up a nationwide call for applications to discover new voices from all corners of India. The four selected filmmakers will each create short films between 20 and 40 minutes in length, with works presented in four different languages: Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, and Tamil. The move signals a clear intent to highlight regional cinema and ensure that diverse linguistic and cultural narratives are brought to the forefront.
The selected filmmakers will be mentored by a distinguished group of industry veterans, including National Award-winning actor and director Konkona Sen Sharma, the highly regarded Malayalam filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, acclaimed director and producer Vikramaditya Motwane, and celebrated Tamil filmmaker Vetri Maara. These mentors will work closely with the filmmakers throughout the entire process—helping to refine their stories, elevate their technical execution, and push the creative boundaries of what is possible with modern filmmaking tools.
What’s in store for the winners?
The completed short films will premiere at a special screening event, followed by their release on the MAMI YouTube channel, ensuring widespread accessibility and audience engagement.
