Meta partners with IT ministry to set up Centre for Generative AI at IIT Jodhpur

Global social media company Meta has announced a partnership with the ministry of electronics and information technology to set up a Centre for Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), the latter said.

The IT ministry said the Centre for Generative AI, to be set up at the Indian Institute of Jodhpur, will work towards advancing open-source AI in India.

“The partnership will enable development of indigenous AI applications, advance skill development in AI, boost research capabilities with the aim of contributing to India’s AI mission of ensuring tech sovereignty and the vision of building AI solutions that are tailor made for India,” IT ministry said.

IT ministry secretary S Krishnan said that Initiatives like these that foster a tripartite collaboration between the government, industry and academia are crucial in creating an ecosystem for new research, skill development and open-source innovation in AI.

“The initiative will support India’s ambitious goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by equipping the nation’s youth to lead in the global AI arena, securing India’s position as a leader in technological advancement and economic growth,” he said.


Meta has committed to investing Rs 7.5 crore over the next three years in the Centre for Generative AI to be set up at IIT Jodhpur. The centre will empower the next generation of researchers, students, and practitioners with the knowledge and tools necessary for the responsible development and deployment of GenAI technologies, the company said.

“This program aims to bridge the AI talent gap in the country by empowering students and young developers aged 18-30 to leverage open-source large language models (LLMs) to address real-world challenges. It aims to build capacity in generative AI skills, utilizing open-source LLMs while fostering AI innovation across key sectors,” the company said.
